The Biotechnology Undergraduate Program in the Department of Plant Biology at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers University invites applicants for a Part Time Lecturer position on the New Brunswick/Cook Campus for Fall 2023. The position will be responsible for teaching a course called Bioinformatics. This course is an introduction to the basics of algorithms used to cast problems of molecular biology in terms of bioinformatics. Primarily Python-based, it will teach bioinformatics concepts, principles, and techniques within the framework of basic shell scripting and web-based databases/tools. Students are expected to have a basic background in computer science and data structures, know how to work in a command-line environment and have a basic understanding of programming/ scripting. The course should preferably include a brief introduction to working with UNIX/LINUX systems, writing Python scripts, and automating/using existing applications for the analysis of large datasets. A graduate level version of the course should also be offered with extra requirements for graduate students.
The successful candidate will report to the Undergraduate Program Director in Biotechnology and the Department Chair in Plant Biology, and will be required to administer and instruct the course, including a computer terminal-based dry laboratory on the Rutgers campus. The course will be offered in-person.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master or PhD Degree in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, or related discipline. Demonstrated knowledge in bioinformatics, preferably Python-based.
