The Cochella lab is looking for a Research Specialist who will join a young and dynamic, international, scientific community to tackle questions related to regulation of gene expression during development and disease. The main responsibilities will be ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the laboratory (including managing supplies and reagents), molecular biology work, and work with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (such as managing a frozen strain collection, microinjection, microscopy and genetics). For interested candidates there will be opportunities to pursue an independent research project, and a chance to make an important contribution to basic biomedical research.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Perform a range of assays and experiments specific to area of research, which will include handling C. elegans and generating transgenic lines, molecular cloning, immunostaining, in situ hybridization and microscopy, among others.
Make contributions to various aspects of research efforts: team up with students and postdocs to advance specific research projects
Managing the C. elegans collection.
Preparing solutions and other reagents for general use.
Overall lab organization.
Ordering and obtaining quotes from Vendors for equipment and consumables.
Equipment maintenance, coordinating repairs and service contracts.
Shipping reagents to collaborators.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Have strong communication skills.
Good organizational skills.
Knowledge of good lab practices required (including detail-oriented documentation).
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, format data and/or test reports.
Individual must be able to work independently as well as in a team.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 70% of the time.
Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus.
The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes). In some areas work space is limited.
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Hands-on experience with molecular biology preferred.
Experience with microscopy and/or C. elegans work will be highly regarded.
