The Department of Systems Biology at Columbia University is seeking Postdoctoral Research Scientists in the systems evolutionary biology field to join the laboratory of Dr. Dennis Vitkup. We are looking for scientists who are interested in understanding how functional organization of biological systems shapes and constrains evolution of proteins, cellular networks, and species' phenotypes. To invert the logic of the famous statement by Theodosius Dobzhansky, we believe that very little in protein and genomic evolution makes sense except in the light of the underlying biology. We pursue both computational and analytical research, and closely interact with our experimental collaborators. We are also interested in reciprocal interactions between evolutionary processes and complex ecological dynamics for systems such as microbial communities.
Candidates with a PhD in computational and systems biology, molecular evolution, population genetics, or biophysics are especially encouraged to apply. We are looking for independent and driven researchers with strong programming and/or analytical skills with interest in combining ideas from evolutionary and systems biology. The background in the analysis of sequences, cellular networks, protein structure, and diverse omics data is a big plus. We offer very competitive salary and health benefits. We encourage scientific travel, attending conferences, and interdisciplinary projects focused on answering long-standing and exciting scientific questions. Columbia's Department of Systems Biology includes many computational and experimental laboratories pursuing cutting edge research in microbiology, synthetic biology, metabolism, cancer, brain and mental disorders, immunology, evolution, and protein structure and interaction predictions. This provides many opportunities for exciting collaborations and cross-pollination of ideas between difference scientific areas and novel methodological approaches.
If interested, please apply to this posting. You may also email your CV, statement of research interest, and the names of three professional references to Dr. Dennis Vitkup at email@example.com.
