The UW Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (DAID) has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time software developer.

This position will support the Chu Lab to work on a research platform that enables a large-scale study of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory illnesses in Seattle and Portland. The software developer will be part of Dr. Helen Chu’s lab and will work closely with engineers from the Brotman Baty Advanced Technology Lab to maintain and improve the existing system for data collection and analysis, contribute to the development of new web applications, and extend functionality of existing data and interface code for such applications. This position also collaborates with peers and others to improve practices, processes, and tools for software development, testing, versioning, continuous integration, automated release and deployment of service changes, and operations and monitoring.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Web application development and maintenance (70%)

Contribute to building reusable code and libraries for future use and refractor existing code to improve maintainability, readability, and testability.

Interact with management and staff to gather requirements for the specific needs of the software improvements.

Collaborate on design and techniques to improve the existing data system.

Develop new applications based on the requirements of the users and to meet the needs of the study objectives. This will include but not limited to development of APIs, webpages, dashboards and other tools.

Work with REDCap for data collection workflows related to code formulation and processes.

Follow software development best practices. This includes but not limited to writing specifications and code documentation and operational support.

Responsible for software administration to help streamline processes and troubleshoot issues that arise through bug resolution in order to provide timely and comprehensive user.

Responsible for quality assurance by testing new software modules prior to final implementation to check for bugs or potentially undesirable side-effects of code interaction.

Assist with generating and maintaining data reports in REDCap.

Assist with identifying and troubleshooting issues in REDCap that are related to code that is created and stored in external applications.

Data Investigation (20%)

Generates complex database queries and ad hoc reports to uncover clinical trends and insights.

Investigates and identifies data idiosyncrasies and fluctuations and makes recommendations that support goals and objectives.

Assists with development & implementation of Data QA/QC protocols for clinical trials and other research projects as needed.

General (10%)

Communicate clearly and effectively while contributing as a productive member of the Chu Lab team and the Institute as a whole.

Collaborate with a diverse interdisciplinary team across faculty, staff, outside project collaborators based in different home institutions to define informatics needs for the study and communicate updates.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Statistics, related field or equivalent experience.

Minimum three years related experience, whether in an academic or professional setting.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Experience with source code management tools like Github.

Experience with REDCap or willingness to rapidly onboard and learn REDCap.

Fluency in at least one high-level programming language, such as Python, JavaScript, or C#. Much of our core software is written in Python.

Experience with relational database systems. We primarily use PostgreSQL.

Familiar with secure design and coding practice.

Strong troubleshooting skills in working with complex server configurations.

Experience with scalable and reliable software systems.

Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies and skills.

Ability to work well cross functionally, especially with technical teams.

Ability to adhere to institutional review board (IRB) regulations related to studies of human subjects.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Highly self-directed and creative with interest in program growth and teamwork.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced training in computer or data science, programming or informatics.

Have expertise in web development.

Experience with cloud infrastructure.

Experience implementing web APIs.

Experience or interest in public health, biology, bioinformatics or genomics.
