Position Summary/Description:
The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a Pediatric Geneticist for a Physician Scientist track to join their team. The candidate will join an established team and will be supported to establish their independent research and can also join the ongoing research efforts in LSD disorders, especially MPS. The candidate will spend some time on the clinical service, in care and management of patients with genetic and metabolic disorders. This position is full-time, variable-term/as an Assistant Professor. The ideal candidate will be board certified/board eligible in Pediatrics and Clinical Genetics/Biochemical Genetics who is interested in an academic position. The interested candidate should have a track record in working on longitudinal research projects, applying for grants and having a funded project is desirable. The candidate must have excellent teaching skills and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. Responsibilities will include dedicating nearly 50% of their time to the research effort with the other 50% devoted to clinical activities. The latter will involve evaluation and management of patients with congenital abnormalities, connective tissue disorders, skeletal dysplasia's, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic disorders in both outpatient and inpatient settings. There will be opportunities to apply for extramural funding to achieve research support in the early years of their career. The Pediatric Genetics team includes six physicians, five genetic counselors, two metabolic dieticians and two nurse practitioner providers, who work collaboratively in caring for their patients and families with compassion and evidence-based care. We also have an active accredited fellowship training program. They also work and interact closely with colleagues from Adult Medical and Cancer Genetics, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetic Laboratories. Faculty members in the Division are actively involved in hearing loss research, mucopolysaccharidosis translational research, clinical studies evaluating the utility of using next generation sequencing for newborn screening and with the birth defects registry. The North Carolina Children's Hospital is part of a busy quaternary care medical center and a major referral center for children with complex conditions in the state and region. The North Carolina Children's Hospital has 150 inpatient beds and a comprehensive children's outpatient center located in the same building, enabling children to see multiple specialists in a single visit. The North Carolina Children's Hospital physicians work hand-in-hand with community hospitals and pediatricians all across the state, providing specialty care to more than 70,000 children from all 100 counties in North Carolina each year. This support includes seed funding, regulatory assistance, data management, drug/device development and grant preparation among other things.
