We are seeking a Research Specialist. The Research Specialist will participate in laboratory research, and will be responsible for performing animal experiments, cell and tissue culture, in-vitro microbiological assays, and next-generation sequencing. In addition, the specialist will be part of all academic activities in the lab, including participation in group meetings and journal club, literature reviews, and manuscript writing.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Mouse work - designing and performing experiments in SPF and germ-free mice, using multiple metabolic, immune, and infectious models.
Sequencing - performing microbiome analysis using next-generation sequencing, including purification of DNA/RNA from biological samples, PCR and qPCR amplification, sequencing libraries preparation and quality validation. Training will be provided for individuals interested in utilizing bioinformatic tools for microbiome analysis.
Tissue and cell culture - maintaining and preserving cell cultures, maintaining aseptic technique, preparing media with the appropriate characteristics, passaging, freezing and storage, recovering frozen stocks, and counting viable cells.
Microbiology - designing and performing experiments in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, including with BL2 pathogens.
Perform, document and analyze experiments in a rigorous and ethical manner to be included in publications / grants.
Train junior members (new fellows/students/visiting scholars) in the lab and performs quality assurance reviews for the scientific data, as well as participate in the discussion of ideas for new research projects.
Set up, optimize and validate lab protocols.
Organize laboratory working areas and supplies.
Routine maintenance of equipment.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Microbiology or related field.
One year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Master's Degree preferred.
Experience in at least one, animal husbandry, next-generation sequencing, metabolomics.
