DESCRIPTION
The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 51 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs.
The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation – from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.
Under supervision, perform assays and experiments to study myeloid cell interactions with other immune cells and developing tumors. Responsibilities include maintaining the animal colony, handling mice for surgical procedures, harvesting tumors, performing molecular, biochemical, and biological assays as well as in vivo experiments to understand the role of myeloid cells in cancer. Isolate single cells from the tumors, bone marrow, and blood cells and perform flow cytometry, gene expression, and immunoblotting assays. Perform primary cell culture, and isolate DNA and RNA from cell culture and tissues. Perform cryosectioning of tissue, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, ELISA and SDS-PAGE analysis. Record and analyze data accurately and perform lab inventory. Others duties assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology and cell biology or a Bachelor's of Science degree in an appropriate field of science or equivalent in education and experience.
Experience with in vivo experiments including assisting in the injection of growth factors and tissue harvesting of mice and in performing minor surgery.
Experience with protein analysis techniques including protein determination and protein separation techniques.
Experience working with endothelial, myeloid and tumor cell culture, DNA and RNA isolation from culture cells and from tissues, immunoblotting and quantitative RT-PCR for genes and proteins that regulate myeloid cell adhesion, migration and gene and protein expression in vitro and in vivo.
Knowledge of tissue culture techniques, including sterile technique, cell adhesion and migration assays.
Experience performing molecular biological techniques, including DNA purification and cloning.
Ability to use basic laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances pH meters and electrophoresis equipment.
Ability to follow step wise experimental protocols. Ability to learn to carry out radioactive work.
Willingness and ability to handle mice for surgical procedures, including anesthesia administration. Experience to maintain animal colony by breeding, genotyping and weaning animals, creating new animal strains and keeping accurate records.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.
Experience with personal computers, including word processing and spreadsheets. Ability to use Quartzy and Oracle to place and reconcile orders and receipts.
