The Center for Alcohol Studies (CAS) is one of fourteen National Research Centers funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Founded in 1970, John A. Ewing, M.D., who served as its first director, and Senator Hargrove Skipper Bowles, through their vision and commitment, along with that of Representative Sam Johnson, led the Bowles Center and the state of North Carolina to the forefront of research
