Applicants are invited for a postdoctoral position at the University of Washington (UW), School of Medicine in the area of cerebrovascular disease and neuroinflammation under the leadership of Dr. Jonathan Weinstein. Dr. Weinstein is an academic clinician-scientist in the department of Neurology with extensive clinical and research training and experience in the stroke research, glial cell biology and neuroinflammation fields. Dr. Weinstein has assembled an outstanding multidisciplinary research team focusing on innate immune signaling and glial cells in the context of ischemia.
The current position would be primarily funded by Dr. Weinstein's new R01 grant from NIH (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-20-185.html). The focus of this project is on understanding neuroimmune and vascular changes underpinning initiation and progression of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), the pathophysiologic substrate that leads to vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). The project will use a novel transgenic mouse model for these studies that combines genetic and environmental risk factors that reliably and consistently induce neuropathologic and neurologic outcomes that closely resemble human cases of CSVD/VCI. The project will use a combination of transcriptomic, pharmacologic and genetic approaches to explore the role of microglia and neuroimmune signaling in the initiation and progression of CSVD. With outstanding collaborators in UW Radiology and Seattle Children's Research Institute, we will also use state-of-the-art neuroimaging modalities such as high resolution (14 T) multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) and 2-photon microscopy to longitudinally track changes in white matter (WM) and within the cerebral vasculature.
Broadly speaking, the Weinstein laboratory is interested in cellular and molecular mechanisms of ischemic injury and endogenous protection. In particular, we focus on innate immune signaling (including type 1 interferon signaling) in ischemic WM with an emphasis on elucidating microglial-oligodendrocyte and microglial-endothelial cell interactions. We have a particular interest in studying ischemic preconditioning and mechanisms of axonal protection in WM. The postdoctoral applicant is encouraged to help advance projects within these areas of interest both within the context of our new R01 and also other ongoing studies in the lab.
Successful candidates will be expected to:
Integrate well with our research team
Carry out experimental work and associated data analyses that have been discussed and mutually agreed upon with the PI
Participate in and contribute to regular lab meetings
Mentor graduate and undergraduate students
Write and publish results in peer-reviewed neuroscience journals
Present research results to peers and at conferences
Participate in professional development activities including DEI efforts
Prior experience/expertise in one or more of the areas stated below would be beneficial:
Experimental work with rodents
Cell culture and molecular and/or protein chemistry assays
This full-time, 12-month position has immediate availability for an initial one-year appointment. The position will be renewable annually contingent on performance and available funding. Anticipated start date: November 1, 2022

Eligible applicants should have a Ph.D. in neuroscience or a related field, or a foreign equivalent. Salary will be commensurate with research experience and based on the NIH guidelines for postdoctoral trainees. This position is searching for an entry-level postdoctoral scholar, and will be given the title Post-doctoral Scholar.
