Location: Indianapolis
Department: IUPUI Department of Biohealth Informatics – School of Informatics and Computing
Position Announcement:
Pioneer the emerging field of cardioinformatics by working together with computational genetics experts and team of scientists to design and implement bioinformatics and computational biology approaches to analyze human genomic data and drive discoveries in public health, with a focus on biostatistical methods, database development (e.g., HeartBioPortal), AI/machine learning approaches (e.g., causal inference methods), and instrumental variable analysis techniques (e.g., Mendelian Randomization) directly relevant to heart health and disease and its applications to drug discovery. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, causing over 17 million deaths per year.
Basic Qualifications:
Background in biological and/or quantitative sciences; PhD and/or previous post-doctoral experience in genetics, statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, or related computational discipline.
Sound statistical and quantitative skills, with knowledge of epidemiological principals and population-based research.
Interest in gaining hands-on experience working with very large genomic datasets, multi-omics, and integrative bioinformatics strategies, with a special focus on Mendelian randomization techniques.
Previous publication record in either: next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods, biostatistics methodologies, cardiovascular/renal/metabolic disease, and/or bioinformatics or computational biology pipelines.
Experience working with large-scale genomic data (e.g., RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, single cell-seq, ATAC-seq, genotype data, etc.).
Desire to apply your skills in genomics analysis to utilize bioinformatics methods (e.g., from Bioconductor) to understand the biology of cardiovascular disease phenotypes (e.g., using R packages such as 'bimmer', an approach for inferring causal networks over many traits using Mendelian randomization).
Comfortable writing code in languages like R or Python for bioinformatics analysis and/or proficiency in Unix shell scripting.
Familiarity/experience/interest with JavaScript programming, frontend frameworks (e.g., Vue.js, React.js, etc.), or various NGS algorithms (e.g., Bowtie, BLAST, PLINK, etc.) for database development is a plus but not strictly required
