Position Summary
The laboratory of Dr. Bo Zhang in the Department of Developmental Biology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is searching for a Bioinformatician in Bioinformatics and Data Sciences. We are seeking a talented, self-motivated Bioinformatics Scientist with a background in developing analytical algorithm, data processing pipeline to support our NIH-supported research program to investigate the epigenetic regulation of transposable element in human genome. S/he will apply computational techniques in analyzing large-scale genomics/epigenomic data, create data-driven models and data visualizations, write and prepare manuscripts and other materials for internal and external audiences, and assist in grant applications.
The successful candidate will join an internationally competitive scientific environment, and is expected to work closely with colleagues in Developmental Biology, Center of Regenerative Medicine, and other research institutes at Washington University.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Designs, develops, and implements:
- Algorithms and computer software for omics-based data sets [high-throughput, massively parallel genomic/proteomic/clinical].
- Data management and analysis solutions that aid in the storage, investigation, and dissemination of large data sets.
- Independent research projects, including design of research protocols and development of procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
Performs complex systems analysis of data and writes interpretative reports.
Evaluates commercial and academic bioinformatics software.
Trains other researchers on the everyday use of analysis software and research databases.
Assists with grant preparation and reporting of methods, data, and results.
Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects; suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.

Preferred Qualifications
- A M.S or Ph.D. in computer science/statistics/bioinformatics/statistical genetics/genetic epidemiology/computational biology or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in biology, particularly human genetics.
- Excellent programming(e.g. Python, R, C, mySQL), database and interactive web application skills.
- Proficiency in the manipulation and statistical analysis of large datasets from different sources and in different formats, and experience in conducting and organizing research projects.
Required Qualifications
Bachelorâ™s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related field plus four years of experience; OR masterâ™s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related field plus two years of experience; OR combined education and experience of nine years.

Salary Range
$53,000.00 - $96,200.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
