The Institute houses the Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC), which offers shared core facilities services to catalyze and promote life sciences research, and is involved with many intercampus initiatives and multi-institutional collaborations. In addition to Epigenomics, the BRC includes core facility operations in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Imaging, Flow Cytometry, Proteomics and Metabolomics, and Biotechnology Development. The Institute also administers the Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) in the Life Sciences to assist life science researchers in the development of biotechnologies with commercial potential in partnership with New York State industries, and the Center for Life Sciences Ventures, a state-of- the-art business incubator for emerging biotechnology companies. The Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) Epigenomics Core Facility is seeking a lab manager. The facility conducts state-of-the-art research in molecular biology and computational biology, with emphasis in eukaryotic gene regulation, transcription, epigenetics, epigenomics, tumor diagnostics, and high-throughput computer-aided analytic workflows. This lab manager position would have the following responsibilities: ensure the smooth and continuous operation of the "wet" bench part of the lab and to coordinate the lab's large-scale DNA sequencing projects by directing novel research in support of customer services. In addition to technician scheduling, and mentoring full and part-time staff personnel for the lab, the lab manager will:
- Oversee complex experimentation in support of core services, review progress and evaluate results.
- Conduct state-of the-art research in molecular biology with emphasis in eukaryotic gene regulation, transcription, epigenetics, epigenomics, tumor diagnostics, and high-throughput computer-aided liquid automation systems (robot).
- Works with LIMS, feedback systems, and be responsible for integration with the lab's high-throughput automated computer analysis workflows.
There is also a large component of support to various administrative tasks such as hiring, overseeing purchasing and billing within a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and tracking of consumables. This position is also responsible for ensuring all lab personnel are fully trained and compliant with all University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies. This leadership role is expected to promote an environment conducive to learning, collaboration, and effective work relationships amongst a diverse group of researchers.
What we need:
- Master's degree in a related field of biochemistry or molecular biology and at least 3 years of experience conducting complex experiments, including demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret results while maintaining scientific rigor, consistency and excellent record keeping (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- A critical requirement is an ability to project confidence and friendly authority on proper day-to-day lab operations, including over those who may have a higher academic degree or higher seniority.
- Additional necessary skills include an ability to work independently, attention to detail, being a team player, and effective communication skills (written and verbal).
Additional qualifications that would be extra helpful for the position:
Administrative experience running a medium to large size molecular biology lab and a demonstrated ability to write up experimental results, lab notes, and procedures.
This is a full-time, 3-year term appointment with possibility of extension contingent on continued funding.
This position is expected to work primarily on campus, with opportunity for flexible scheduling and remote work when appropriate.
This position is a Research Support Specialist III classification with a hiring range of $78,070 to $87,829, with initial pay considering university, unit and department equity, as well as individual compensable factors.
