The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non-profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and located on the UC Berkeley campus. A key focus of the IGI is accelerating translation of CRISPR-based approaches to address real-world problems in human health, agriculture, and climate.

Responsibilities
Perform diagnostic testing - Performs a variety of standardized and non-standardized clinical laboratory tests, primarily assays related to diagnosis of human genetic disorders and other human genome sequencing assays, requiring professional judgment and experience.
- Provides technical consultation to clinical and other laboratory staff.
- Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Monitors procedures and certifies tests performed by the lab assistant after appropriate review of quality control and test results.
- Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the IGI lab performance specifications and that patient results are not released until the system is functioning correctly.
- Routinely performs and documents preventative maintenance, proficiency testing, quality control records, test worksheets and initiates actions as appropriate.
Test development and validation - Assists in defining quality metrics for novel sequencing assays.
- Assesses the performance of new sequencing procedures.
- Incorporates new sequencing techniques and procedures into the clinical laboratory's test menu.
- Maintains sequencing equipment.
Specimen Procurement and Processing - Judges appropriateness of specimens in correlation with orders.
- Judges quality of specimens and rejects those not acceptable.
- Handles specimens according to procedures.
- Performs the duties of the Lab Assistant as required.
Performs other duties as assigned, which may include but are not limited to: - Training other personnel.
- Evaluating methods and procedures.
- Performing specimen preparation and processing.
- Maintain, inventory, distribute, and order supplies and reagents.
- Perform and document proficiency testing.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Basic computer skills and experience.
- Excellent organizational skills, with attention to detail.
- Experience working with and demonstrating respect and inclusivity to diverse individuals and lifestyles.
- Capable of excelling within a team environment.
- Performance of next-generation sequencing assays.
- General laboratory, equipment, and benchtop maintenance.
- Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
- Familiarity with the laboratory information management system.
Education/ Training - Graduation from college with a major in an appropriate scientific field and knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position and/or equivalent training or experience.
- Two years of experience as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist and/or equivalent training or experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position.
Licenses/ Certifications - Possession of a clinical laboratory scientist license or similar license of equal of higher level, issued by the State Department of Health (e.g. CLS, CGMBS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with molecular biology techniques, including PCR and/or equivalent training or experience.
- At least 1 year experience performing testing or quality assurance for molecular tests within a high complexity laboratory and/or equivalent training or experience.
