The Department of Molecular Therapeutics is seeking an Associate Research Scientist in the Laboratory of Dr. Sulzer. The successful applicant will work in the interface between experimental systems biology and computational behavioral analysis. The ARS will conduct independent experimental studies and develop computational models to provide a systems-level understanding of motor behavior in health and in neurodegenerative disease. Using a combination of photometry and electrochemical techniques the candidate will quantify the activity in striatal and dopaminergic neurons. The ideal candidate will be able to complement their experimental studies with computational models for analysis purposes. They will be involved in all aspects of experimental design, execution, and computational analysis for a wide range of research projects including but not limited to fiber photometry, cyclic voltammetry, and behavioral techniques. The candidate should be able to work independently to design and execute relevant experiments but should also be able to work in a team environment. The ideal candidate will have the necessary programming skills to extend existing computational tools developed in the Sulzer Lab, analyze high-throughput data, and develop new tools as required by the project. The candidate will be expected to work with scientists, graduate students, and postdocs to understand project requirements and to provide computational modeling, experimental design, and data analysis advice.
Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. degree in a field related to System Biology, Neurodegenerative diseases, or related neurosciences. 3 years of post-graduate level experience in Computational Biology and experimental Systems Biology. A demonstrated ability to use advanced computational/bioinformatics tools and experimental methods and a good publication record. The candidate should also have working knowledge of computational tools particularly for behavior and photometric analysis (such as python, matlab, R, and software like DeepLabCut and Anymaze) with demonstrated experience in problem solving and programming for behavioral projects. The candidate must have experience with a range of techniques including, but not limited to fiber photometry, cyclic voltammetry, immunohistochemistry, protein/DNA/RNA purification and quantification, mouse stereotaxic surgeries and mouse behavior. Excellent organizational and communication skills are necessary. Preferred Qualifications: Fluency with at least one behavior specific programming language like Arduino, and MedAssociate is very desirable as well as proficiency in a mathematical computing environment (MATLAB, R, etc.) and the use of online analysis platforms, including amazon web service or google colab.
