Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit, unified adult cancer care and research center that is clinically integrated with UW Medicine, a world leader in clinical care, research and learning. The Newell Lab is a highly collaborative group within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, and the Computational Biology Program in the Public Health Sciences division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The lab focuses on the application and development of novel approaches for studying antigen-specific T cells in the context of cancer and infectious diseases. In addition to leveraging expertise in the use of mass cytometry to deeply profile antigen-specific T cells, novel single cell sequencing and computational approaches are being used that allow for improved examination of T cell phenotypes, function, antigen specificity, as well as T cell receptor repertoire.

The Bioinformatics Analyst is responsible for working with our collaborators to provide single-cell data analyses and visualizations using bioinformatics tools. The bioinformatics analyst position will work with a small team of bioinformatics specialists and developers to achieve our goal of using computational methods to understand complex diseases and immunotherapy performance. A successful candidate will have experience in data quality check, data analysis, generating visualizations, writing analysis summaries and abstracts, and managing time across various projects with different collaborators.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

• Work with research collaborators to gather requirements and data analysis pipelines to meet their research goals
• Provide statistical analysis, data summaries, and visualizations for use in collaborating projects
• Participate in meetings and presentations with collaborating labs
• Write abstracts and summaries around computational methods
• Assist team with data management tasks such as data cleaning, standardization, and quality control

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• BS/Master/Ph.D degree in Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, or related
• Proficient with routine single-cell data analysis on Linux server, including but not limited to normalization, batch effect removal, cell-type annotation, differential detection, dimension reduction, and visualization
• Proficient with single-cell genomics data analysis tools, such as Seurat, Bioconductor, Scanpy, Cellranger, cellxgene, or Loupe Cell Browser
• Proficient with modern programming languages (e.g., R, Python)
• Proficient with writing customized single-cell analysis scripts
• Able to learn new tools and content quickly and independently
• Strong oral and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experienced in using source code management (e.g., Git, GitHub)
• Experienced in doing reproducible analysis using tools like Rmarkdown or Jupyter notebooks
• Experienced in using Slurm system to manage jobs on the server
• Experienced in using FlowJo or other flow cytometry analysis tools
• Experience developing novel single-cell data processing and analysis pipelines or tools
• Some experience with immunology or immunotherapy data analysis will be a plus
