A vascular biology and cardiovascular genetics laboratory in Vascular Surgery within the Department of Surgery seeks a full-time Laboratory Manager (Life Science Research Professional 1) to conduct research in the field of atherosclerosis and aneurysm research.
The LSRP will perform at a very high level tasked with conducting advanced vascular biology studies employing molecular biology and cell culture models. The LSRP will be involved in specific research projects that are funded by the NIH and other funding agencies, and will independently handle experimental design, execution, and interpretation of results. They will also be expected to make original contributions to the ongoing scientific efforts, analyzing their data and drawing inferential conclusions that promote further research. This LSRP will also be expected to track animals involved in various complex animal model studies, perform genotyping and molecular and in situ studies investigating gene expression and disease features. This LSRP will be responsible for the generation of mouse genetic models and will maintain the mouse colony breeding.
They will be expected to develop figures and text for manuscripts and grants, which they will help generate and submit, as well as supply technical text related to the methods, findings, and implications of the research. The LSRP will be expected to independently develop protocols for new methods in the lab that are central to the research mission, to document and to teach these protocols to incoming students and fellows. The position also entails top level lab management which will support such tasks related to ongoing operation of the lab, including ordering supplies and equipment, annual grant reports, maintaining safety records and lab equipment, and adhering to safety regulations and compliance and regulatory protocols.
Additional duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Perform experiments and optimize experimental protocols; train and assist lab personnel and students with experiments as needed. Compile and analyze data, interpret findings, and help prepare data for posters and presentations. Work will include diverse molecular biology assays, cell culture experiments, quantitative microscopy, histopathology section processing and analysis, and other related work in the field of vascular biology. Experience with RNAseq/bioinformatics is desired.
Establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all lab equipment and existing and new technologies in the lab, troubleshoot, schedule preventative and routine maintenance and calibration of equipment, microscopes, and pipettes. Create reminder calendar for routine maintenance.
Cell culture, including routine mycoplasma testing for all cell lines used in the lab. Implement protocols for routine incubator and biosafety hood cleaning (duties to be shared with other lab members).
Animal husbandry work, including colony maintenance, weaning, genotyping and long term breeding of complex cell-specific knockout models.
Supervise and train new staff, postdocs or students. This includes oversight and instruction on techniques as well as consultation on project work. Serves as technical resource for other research staff.
Assist PI with grant writing, annual reports, material transfer agreements, and other lab-related paperwork. Manage Biosafety regulatory protocols. Package and ship/arrange receipt of samples to/from collaborating laboratories. Perform all ordering for the team. Ensure laboratory is in compliance with all Stanford policies and that all laboratory personnel have completed required training.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in cellular or molecular biology, immunology or related scientific field.
Advanced degree preferred.
Related laboratory research experience.
Knowledge of molecular and cell biology principles and assays.
Experience with nucleic acid isolation and cell culture.
Ability to create and maintain inventory databases for reagents, consumables, and banked specimens.
Must be organized, keep excellent records.
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel proficiency.
Previous supervisory experience.
Willingness to learn animal surgery models is desired, but not mandatory.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
Position may require repetitive motion.
