TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE I, Biological Engineering, to join the research laboratory of Professor Ernest Fraenkel and participate in fast-moving research projects in computational biology. Will work both independently and in a small team as a skilled programmer to assist with research on human disease. The responsibilities will include bioinformatic analysis of data using existing software, evaluating data quality, and streamlining software pipelines; curating metadata and coordinating the transfer of data from collaborating institutions in the Answer ALS consortium; maintaining and running pipelines for processing of omic data; performing quality control on processed data; applying software developed in the lab to new datasets in order to identify disease-related pathways, identifying and eliminating bottlenecks in current software, automating manual steps in current analysis pipelines, and developing web interfaces to current software; and performing other tasks as assigned.
REQUIRED: B.S. degree in a quantitative field such as engineering, applied math, computer, science, bioinformatics, or related field, including some coursework in basic biology; at least two years of bioinformatics experience (which may include experience gained as an undergraduate); familiarity with omic data types such as sequencing data, and/or proteomics; strong programming skills in a high-level language, especially Python and R; proficiency with Linux/UNIX-based environments and shell scripting; experience working with high-performance computing environments; experience in applying statistical methods towards data analysis; demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills; and ability to work independently and understand the current area of research.
