Department Overview
The Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy Senior Staff Scientists oversees the day to day ongoing research portfolio of the Center for Embryonic Cell & Gene Therapy (CECGT, http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/research/centers-institutes/embryonic-cell-gene-therapy-center/) and shares leadership responsibilities which are consistent with the goals of the research program alongside the Director. The employee possesses an exceptional command of knowledge in the fields of molecular biology, embryology, genetics, and bioinformatics and stays current in these ever-changing fields.
The employee will perform research which will involve using mouse and nonhuman primate models, as well as mouse, nonhuman primate and human gametes, embryos, pluripotent cells and various tissues, conducting laboratory analyses of samples by molecular and cellular and developmental methods; assisting with publication of already gathered data, as well as incorporating new data into the development of future projects; assisting in coordinating the efforts of current and future postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and technicians to enable this line of research to continue; and performing a variety of duties which require flexibility, judgment, and unique experience in fields of molecular, stem cell and developmental biology. They will work to adapt and design technical skills in the lab to meet the demands of the ever-changing scientific questions.
This position serves as an expert advisor to the Director and must contribute to the exceptional science at the Center; their research performance will be evaluated by external recognition of their expertise by scientific publication in top journals and consistent presentations at international conferences.
As the advisor to the Director, the Senior Staff Scientist will be asked to travel with or in lieu of the Director to meet with international collaborators. They will guide and oversee research in line with the goals of the CECGT at the bequest of the Director. Additionally, this position will oversee scientific collaborations as dictated by the current research design. The position represents OHSU-CECGT to a world-wide scientific community and must operate with great accuracy, efficiency, and integrity.
The employee is responsible for managing day-to-day operations such as: participate in managing the Laboratory, training and directing postdocs, students, trainees and research staff. Assist in planning experiments and developing new techniques and assays in the laboratory which require flexibility, judgment and unique experience in the field of cell replacement therapy. This position is responsible for providing detailed information and protocols, contributing to written reports, abstracts, project proposals and presentations, publishing manuscripts; they will provide senior-level scientific services and guidance tothe lab, including the writing of technical papers and assisting with grants.
Overall the position promotes the mission of the Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy by exhibiting reliability, productivity, professionalism, accuracy, timeliness, problem-solving, strong ethical understanding of our complex scientific focus, as well as compassion and kindness when communicating.
Function/Duties of Position
1 Technical Research* Provide various cell, embryo and molecular biology techniquesincluding stem cell derivation, culture differentiation, molecularbiology assays PCR, q-PCR, RNA-seq, whole genome, exome andmtDNA sequencing, expression vector design, RNAi, Southern andWestern blot, gene targeting, expression profiling, ChiP and DNAmethylation analysis, genetic modification of cell lines, studies onepigenetic and genetic signature of pluripotent cells, protein analysis,preparation of media, general laboratory upkeep, animal handling andrequired record keeping (manual and computerized).* Assist in planning of experimental design.* Develop, maintain and periodically update laboratory protocols.* Assume responsibility for specific projects in the laboratory.
2. Report Preparation* Prepare various reports containing descriptive and analytical data, andevaluate data that may be submitted for publication, or forcontribution to grant application(s), progress reports, etc.* Analysis and graphical illustration of results and development ofmanuscripts.* Produce summary reports of all data; communicate results clearly andeffectively.* Literature Research - Conduct searches of the scientific literature andmaintain a database of scientific reprints.* Material Presentation - Actively participate in education and outreachprograms, representing the lab in international and national settings.* Present research findings to scientific meetings.* Attend professional meetings when financial resources permit travel.
3. Data Analysis and Record Keeping* Organize and summarize data; computer data entry. Maintain records(unsupervised) in computerized data base for both sample and animalmodel data. Maintain the integrity of databases; analyze data;* Contribute data summaries to publication and grant submissions. * Perform complex data analysis on experimental resultsgenerated. Use computer software to input and manage data forfuture analysis.
4. Laboratory Management* Manage day-to-day operations, establish Standard OperatingProcedures (SOPs), train, manage and evaluate the workperformance of Laboratory staff; delegate tasks, oversee work ofstudents and other staff; purchase equipment and supplies, andoversee maintenance of equipment.* Provide supervision and mentorship of trainees and other staffwithin the lab with regards to scientific training and laboratoryexperiments.* Participate as a team member in fostering and supportingteamwork.* Support the Center Director in recruitment activities
5. Other:* Present and teach research expertise to graduate courses and/orscientific bodies as needed.* Oversee daily functions of assigned laboratory experiment portfolio,including the purchase of laboratory supplies, and complianceauthorizations necessary to perform work.* Participate in other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in relevant field and 7+years of relevant post-doctoral workexperience.
- 3-5 years relevant research experience ina laboratory setting with background inreproductive/molecular/cellular biology,animal physiology, or endocrinologyresearch.
- Independent proficiency inmolecular biology and cell culturetechniques listed above.
- Ability to communicateeffectively, in both written andoral formats;
- Ability to work bothindependently and in a smallgroup setting, and one-on-onewith collaborators and clients ina positive and producive manner
- Work efficiently and skillfullywith a variety of diverse staff andcollaborators;
- Experience with relevantsoftware
- Demonstrated independence andcompetence to perform datamanagement and analysis ofresearch finding, including use ofspreadsheets, graphics andstatistical program
- Ability to prioritize workdemands, and coordinateresearch protocols with otherstaff
- Organizational skills and carefulattention to details tosatisfactorily perform job duties
- Laboratory management andquality control skills.
- High level of self-motivation andintegrity
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in a relevantfield and 10+ years ofrelevant post-doctoral workexperience.
- Degree in OBGYN, Genetics,Molecular Biology, PublicHealth, Biology, or Zoologywith experience in primateembryo and ESC culture, molecular biology andphysiology.
