The genetic counselor will serve the needs of individuals and families in the community affected by or at risk for cancer by providing genetic counseling and assisting them in obtaining appropriate medical care. The Genetic Counselor is also an important educational resource for the community and other healthcare providers.This is a professional level position working independently within the cancer team including two cancer genetic counselors and a medical geneticist. The Genetic Counselor obtains and interprets detailed family histories, analyzes inheritance patterns, provides personalized risk assessment, reviews available family planning and testing options, and coordinates appropriate referrals to healthcare providers and/or community and state support services. Work situations require intense and difficult interaction with clients and families requiring a service-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and good judgment. Internal contacts include staff and management throughout the MHS. External contacts include physicians, community agencies and outside organizations.Minimum Requirements:-One year of clinical experience in an outpatient setting, though a new graduate with exceptional motivation will also be considered-Cancer genetic counseling experience preferred-Master's Degree conferred by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)-Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or Active Candidate Status by the American Board of Genetic Counseling -Washington State Genetic Counselor License
