Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Quantitative Genetics and Maize Breeding program at Iowa State is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to lead innovative research to understand the genetic, environmental, and developmental mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation observed for complex traits in crops. The target traits include leaf angle, flowering time, plant height, and other complex traits with evolutionary and agricultural importance. This postdoctoral research associate is expected to work on one or a combination of these areas: 1) to identify and characterize major genes by leveraging whole-genome sequencing, transcriptomics, phenomics, and genome editing; 2) to develop new approaches to identify genes, environmental factors, and growth windows that are critical to trait expression; 3) to explore ways to optimize the design of mining genetic diversity for crop improvement by leveraging genomics and understanding of phenotypic plasticity; and 4) to integrate crop growth model and machine learning to dissect and predict performance. This postdoctoral research associate is expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals. There will be opportunities to collaborate with experts in developmental genetics, genome editing, genomics, crop growth modeling, agricultural engineering, and machine learning.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

 Ph.D. in genetics, biology, plant breeding, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience in leading innovative research projects.
• Experience in whole-genome sequencing and annotation.
• Experience in working in the molecular lab and field.
• Experience in programming and computer simulation.
• Strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated written and oral communications skills.
• Experience in working with multiple crop species.
