SRA 4 (Veterinary Diagnostician-Antimicrobial Monitoring Program Manager )Job Summary
Under direction of the Bacteriology Discipline Head, responsible for coordinating the performance of bacteriological diagnostic testing as it relates to evaluating bacteria for antimicrobial resistance in the CAHFS system. This position coordinates testing and projects for the CDFA Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship program and performs the antimicrobial susceptibility testing and reporting for the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network AMR pilot project. Ensure that the laboratory and communication need of CDFA personnel are met in regard to addressing activities associated with adherence to the CA SB27 legislation. Activities include continued use of and periodic verification of validated methods using uniform and consistent SOPs and technical methodologies that can be performed in laboratories across the system (Davis, Turlock, Tulare, San Bernardino). Participate in sample processing and bacterial recovery, identification, phenotypic evaluations for antimicrobial susceptibility or resistance, genotypic screening for antimicrobial resistance elements, and other evaluations of these agents necessary to support clinical diagnostics and CDFA programmatic monitoring activities. Responsible for preparing/writing reports, presenting information to CDFA officials and outside organizations including professional meetings, performing cost analyses, preparing standard operating procedures and assist with grant preparation, as well as participating in the preparation of peer-reviewed publications and CAHFS-internal and external documents as needed for the growth and promotion of CAHFS Bacteriology and specifically the CDFA Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) Program. Perform diagnostic bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing to accomplish work in CDFA-supported outside research projects. Perform literature searches and participate in the design and conduct of research projects which support the AUS program and address requirements of SB27 legislation. As new technologies are implemented in CAHFS branch locations, will also develop procedures and monitor performance of system-wide methodologies to ensure consistency of performance, quality control, quality assurance, and technical proficiency.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD: Post for one month. Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. WORK ENVIRONMENT - This position is subject to Vaccination Program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- This position is not eligible for remote work, due to the nature of the essential responsibilities.
- Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period)
- Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.
- Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.)

- This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.
- Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.
- All CAHFS employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries.
- Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program.
- Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials.
- May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.
QUALIFICATIONSRequired:
- Master's degree with emphasis on microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Demonstrated experience working in an AAVLD-accredited high throughput diagnostic lab performing and interpreting antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience identifying and characterizing mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial organisms.
- Skills to communicate complex and sensitive information, negotiate and resolve conflicts and promote teamwork.
- Analytical, problem solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills to independently research, develop, and recommend solutions to complex problems and issues.
- Knowledge and skills to instruct, technically train, and provide consultation to technical and professional personnel.
- Organizational and analytical skills to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments; to develop, evaluate and implement programs; and to analyze and assess project activities.
Preferred:
- Doctoral or DVM level education with emphasis on microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, or equivalent.
- Experience managing budgets and projects, organizing and delivering presentations, composing reports and written correspondence; analyzing information and present it logically and concisely.
- Experience designing experiments, performing statistical analyses, and preparing scientific reports, papers, and presentations.
- Knowledge of veterinary diseases. Ability to work under multiple deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.
