We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to support the endeavor of the Mitochondrial Psychobiology Laboratory at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Our mission is to understand the mechanisms of the mind-body connection ??? to link the human experience to energy flow within mitochondria. Our long-term goal is to build a health-focused, bioenergetic foundation for the future of medicine. The group???s translational research program involves a range of collaborative clinical and laboratory studies, including international collaborations organized around five major themes (www.picardlab.org), including Technological Development of new laboratory assays and procedures. These synergistic themes will contribute to understand how psychosocial experiences are transduced biologically to shape human health across the lifespan.
The successful applicant who will join our Team should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic about building a productive laboratory environment with the highest standard of rigor. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and able to work effectively with laboratory Members at different stages of training and career. Under the direction of Principal Investigator, the Lab Manager is responsible for developing and optimizing daily laboratory operations, onboarding and offboarding students and new personnel, organizing biobank storage, including biobank databases and handling sample requests, and performing routine assays. The incumbent will process precious human biofluid samples (blood/PBMCs, saliva, urine) and manage the MiSBIE (Mitochondrial Stress, Brain Imaging, and Epigenetics) biobank, manage cryostorage units and database (LN2 and -80 units), order supplies for clinical and in vitro studies, and work closely with study coordinators to ensure efficient progress on NIH-funded studies. She/he/they will drive outstanding laboratory practices, contribute to the development and implementation of high-throughput mitochondrial biology assays, ensure compliance with environmental health and safety requirements. This role requires the capacity to shift between laboratory and administrative tasks, a dedication to operational excellence, and a desire to contribute to the science of health.
Optimizing, performing, and teaching laboratory assays.
Managing and processing clinical samples for the MiSBIE study.
Managing and ordering laboratory supplies.
Managing biobanks and sample requests.
Consulting with laboratory staff on laboratory procedures.
Onboarding and offboarding personnel.
EHS compliance activities.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required; 4 years related experience
Prior experience with blood processing and PBMC isolation
Prior experience with biobank management
Familiarity with latest EHS regulations
Knowledge of university systems is a plus
Must successfully complete online systems training requirements
Must be competent in Microsoft Office and proficient in Excel and web browser programs
Strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
Must be highly organized, with excellent attention to details and follow-up skills
Must be able to work independently, as well as perform as part of a team
Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adjust schedule to meet deadlines
Should have excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
The ability to work diplomatically and collaboratively with all levels of staff and University and Hospital leadership is essential
Strong goal-directed work initiative and ability to work independently
