The George Mason University, School of Systems Biology located in the College of Science (COS), invites applications for our Term Associate Professor in Systems Biology. This is a full-time, 9-month term faculty position scheduled to begin in August 2022.

The selected candidate will teach graduate level courses for students in the MS in Biology program, supervise MS projects and theses, and serve on the MS student project and thesis committees. The typical teaching load is 4 courses per semester. A course buy-out will be allowed for approved grant-funded research and/or other approved service duties and responsibilities.
Other duties include but are not limited to:
Collaborate with other faculty to modify existing and develop new courses;
Serve as a mentor for graduate students in the MS in Biology program; and
Participate in the ongoing development of the program curriculum.
Experienced researcher/educator dedicated to student success;
Doctoral degree in biomedical or related field, and broad training in biomedical sciences;
An applicant must have a successful track record in biomedical research and relevant scholarship. Extensive experience in teaching a wide variety of biomedical subjects in undergraduate and graduate settings is required;
Teaching and curriculum development experience in two or more of the following areas, and must be capable to teach: organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, pharmacology, drug discovery and development, physiology, molecular pathology, microbiology, research ethics and responsible conduct of research; and
Expertise in student advising in health sciences and track record in successful mentoring of graduate students (dissertation/thesis/capstone research).
Teaching experience in graduate program (10+ years);
Evidence of successful curriculum development and delivery for a graduate program in biomedicine to grow, enhance and innovate the existing programs in the department;
Proven track record in implementation of novel curriculum initiatives and their delivery in face-to face, blended and online learning environments;
Experience in program development, program administration and student support;
Evidence of prior educational scholarship and demonstrable productivity;
Experience in simultaneous administration of multiple graduate student projects;
Record of successful extramural funded research program in biomedical sciences and working knowledge of academic biomedical research;
Proven record in managing the technical aspect of curriculum delivery via Blackboard and proficiency with educational software;
Maintain working knowledge of commonly assessed Student Competencies in health sciences and ensure the incorporation of these standards into course materials; and
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in biomedicine, and experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
About the Department:
The School of Systems Biology (SSB) has 22 faculty members with wide-ranging interests in microbiology, infectious diseases, molecular biology and bioinformatics. The department also houses several large research centers including the Center for Infectious Diseases (NCBID), a research center focused on biothreat organisms and emerging infectious diseases, and the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM), focused on personalized medicine with an emphasis on proteomics. The school also has a diverse research-funding portfolio provided by the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation, other agencies, and private industry.
Currently, SSB houses several graduate programs, including Ph.D. in Biosciences, Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, M.S. in Biology, M.S. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and several graduate certificate programs. The Ph.D. and M.S. programs have concentrations in MID, among others. SSB faculty have close collaborations with researchers from a number of local and regional institutions, including the USAMRIID, NIH, Food and Drug Administration, Naval Research Laboratory, and Inova Health System, among others. SSB office and laboratories are located on the Science and Technology Campus of GMU, in Manassas, Prince William County, which primarily focuses on research and academic programs in the biomedical and life sciences.
