The Department of Microbiology and Immunology seeks a qualified and creative postdoctoral scientist with an interest in working on the mechanisms that regulation virulence gene expression in the opportunistic pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii. The applicant should have experience in basic techniques in microbiology and in molecular biology, such as cloning, DNA/RNA purification, and PCR. Experience in techniques to measure gene expression, such as qRT-PCR, use of reporter gene fusions would be an asset. The postdoctoral applicant must have excellent critical thinking skills, a track-record of productivity as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, ability to work well both independently and as part of a team, and proficiency in written and oral English communication.

Qualifications:A doctoral degree or equivalent Ph.D., in Mirobiology or related fields.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Help design and conduct research in bacterial pathogenesis/gene regulation while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. Designs and evaluates experiments. Research will focus on the regulation and characterization of genes that contribut e to virulence in the bacterial pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. Post-Doctoral Fellow is an entry level position in which the research fellow receives training under close supervision of faculty in the Emory University, School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology and Immunology.Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
