The DRIVES Project is seeking a Bioinformaticist to support our interdisciplinary lab in developing relational databases, data processing pipelines, and multi-level data analysis. This position seeks a driven and independent candidate to apply engineering and computational techniques to enhance the performance of existing databases, design new programs for the analyses, write new support programs/scripts, and perform debugging procedures on database scripts and programs.
This flexible role would advance three, ongoing NIH/NIA R01 grants that investigate the long-term impact of Alzheimerâ™s disease (AD) brain pathology on driving behavior and driving cessation among persons with and without preclinical AD. The ability to identify who will be at most risk of driving decline and to predict when decline will occur will inform early driving safety intervention trials for older drivers. Our research program employs several methods to study driving, including the use of an off-the-shelf device used in fleet management that collects naturalistic driving behavior. We also collect a cadre of biomarkers to study disease pathology, including brain imaging (Positron Emission Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and fluid-based (cerebrospinal fluid, blood/plasma) biomarkers.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Algorithms and computer software for multi-level exposure-based data sets using SQL.
Data management and analysis solutions that aid in the storage, investigation, and dissemination of large data sets.
Independent research projects, including design of research protocols and development of procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
Performs complex systems setup of relational data and writes interpretative reports.
Evaluates commercial off-the-shelf and academic bioinformatics programs.
Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with software, hardware, and data architecture.
Masterâ™s degree or Ph.D. in computer science or related field highly preferred.
Database design and management experience.
Experience in data analysis/modeling.
Analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
Expertise in standard bioinformatics tools.
Proficiency in scientific programming and statistical languages (e.g., SQL, Python, R, Java), in a UNIX/Linux and/or Windows environment.
Bachelorâ™s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related field plus four years of experience; or masterâ™s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related field plus two years of experience; or combined education and experience of nine years.
$51,400.00 - $93,400.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
