Job Summary:
This position for a research technologist 2 will be in the neurogenetics laboratory of Dr. Gemma Carvill at Northwestern University in the Department of Neurology, with joint affiliations in Pharmacology, Pediatrics and the Center of Genetic Medicine.
Our research focuses on the genetic and epigenetic basis of epilepsy; we use numerous genomic technologies as well as iPSCs to study pathogenic mechanisms towards discovering new precision therapies. We are seeking a research technologist 2 to work on multiple NIH and Foundation-funded research projects. Learn more about our work and the team here: https://sites.northwestern.edu/carvilllab/
The ideal candidate would have a good background in molecular biology and preference for individuals familiar with genomics technologies and/or stem cell models of disease. This is a highly collaborative translational research focused lab, with opportunities for to interact with faculty in genomics, neurology and pediatrics. The ideal candidate will have expertise and the ability to work independently in one or more of these areas
- Nucleic acid (DNA/RNA/cfDNA) isolation, including from minimal starting material
- qPCR, qRT-PCR and the preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries (exome/genome sequencing and/or bulk/single-cell RNA-seq analysis and/or ChIP/ATAC/CUT&RUN analysis
- Cell culture, stem cells and differentiation to specific cell-types
- Animal hubandary and experimentation
- Genome editing
- High-throughput analysis of cellular features, including FACs analysis
- Good communication Skills
- Proficiencies in word processing, spreadsheet, database software, power point, statistics and other software use in scientific research analysis are required.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
- Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.
- Using a fully functioning level of skill, completes the following activities:
- Molecular Biology:
- DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression Southern, Northern, Western blotting PCR, RT-PCR Plasmid preparation Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA Cellular Biology:
- Cell culture, cell isolation
- Functional studies
- Transfection
- Animal:
- Husbandry
- Breeding and screening transgenic mice
- Dissections
- Blood collection
- Surgical procedures
- Database management of colony
Administration
- Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
- Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.
Finance
- Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.
- Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice &/or lab supplies.
Supervises
Miscellaneous
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
- Working knowledge of computers and software (Microsoft Word, Excel), basic statistics, Ability to work independently; strong organizational skills and multitasking will be required Experience with maintenance of cell lines and basic molecular biology approaches (PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, western blotting etc.) Knowledge of computers and software (Microsoft Word, Excel), basic statistics, ability to work independently
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working in a research lab setting is essential - 2+ years ideal Bachelor’s or Master’s level degree
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
- Experience in stem cell maintenance and neuronal differentiation techniques, immunohistochemistry and genome editing Proficiency in genetics techniques, including next-generation DNA and/or RNA sequencing library preparation is preferred Experience with analysis of next generation sequencing data, and/or bioinformatics, including proficiency with the UNIX environment, python, R
