Berkeley Lab's Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology (EGSB) Division is looking for a Project Scientist to join their Metabolomics Research Group!
In this exciting role, you will join a team of experts that study molecular mechanisms driving beneficial plant-microbial interactions. You will leverage their deep expertise in computational biology, environmental microbiology, and metabolomics analysis to study soil-plant-microbiomes to discover causal mechanisms by which beneficial plant-microbe interactions can positively impact the flow of nutrients within marginal soils.
Genomics and chemistry of plant-microbe interactions are examined to gain insight into how symbiotic and associative microbes improve plant performance and carbon stabilization in marginal soils. We are integrating focused (single plant-microbe pairing) and 'community' systems biology approaches to examine the complex interplay among plants, microbes, and their physico-chemical environment.
What You Will Do:
Computational analysis of metabolomic data.
Perform metabolomics analyses to investigate metabolite exchange between community members and identify plant exudates that sustain rhizosphere communities.
Design and execute experiments to determine factors that mediate carbon and nutrient exchange between plants and bacteria.
Use stable isotopes and computational analyses to gain insights into how bacteria alter plant nutritional requirements.
Perform statistical analyses.
Provide implementation plans that include timeline, procedures, expected outcomes, and risks.
Participate in cross-team and cross-group collaborative projects.
Present research at international conferences and publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Create periodic reports to the management and principal investigators of the program.
Maintain appropriate records and manage data to ensure accessibility and replication of work.
Lead group meetings.
Drive projects to completion and publication.
Direct the work of undergrad students or research assistants.
What is Required:
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience studying plant-microbe interactions beyond the highest customary degree in a related field.
A minimum of 1 year of experience analyzing metabolomic data using GNPS.
Expertise in plant nutrition including extensive experience working with stable isotopes, microbial isolations from diverse environments including soils, and culturing and characterization of achaea.
Experience using omics approaches to study compex plant and soil microbiomes research including in situ metatbolomics.
Experience with fieldwork including large-scale agricultural experiments and growing switchgrass in mesocosms.
Experience with LC-MS based metabolomic analysis and TOC analyzers.
Strong oral and written communication skills including experience successfully publishing high-impact work in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience managing multiple projects in parallel and in corresponding with scientific collaborators.
What We Prefer:
PhD in Plant Science, Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field.
Training in Biostatistics using R.

This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 3 year Term appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
