The Department of Biology, Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of plant physiology. The successful candidate must have a PhD and post-doctoral experience in a relevant field and will become a member of the Department of Biology (https://biology.ok.ubc.ca/). The appointment is expected to start on July 1, 2023, or soon thereafter.

We seek candidates who apply original and multi-faceted research approaches to understanding plant physiology (broadly defined). The candidate’s proposed research should complement current strengths in the genetics and biochemistry of plants including plant-microbe or plant-insect interactions.  Candidates must have a competitive record of scholarly contributions in their field, and the ability to establish a strong externally-funded research program, which may have aspects applied to regional horticulture, agriculture, or forestry such as: sustainable production; crop protection; climate change mitigation; conservation or restoration ecology; or invasive species management.

Candidates will demonstrate evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful, collegial, and conducive learning and working environment. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses on plant biology or other aspects relevant to their expertise.  They will also supervise graduate students, and fulfill service obligations to the university and community. A commitment to applying transparent and reproducible research methods is an asset, as is experience or training in best practices in Open Science.

The Biology Department’s 28 faculty are actively engaged in mentoring 900 undergraduate students in five majors (Biology; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Microbiology; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Zoology), as well as 80 MSc and PhD students. In the past five years, the department has received a total of $15 million in research funding to support 400 different projects.
