Assistant Project Scientist - Division of Cardiology
Project Scientist will make significant and creative contributions to research and creative work in the area of the microvascular determinants to dementia utilizing murine models of disease coupled to sophisticated molecular and bioinformatic analysis tools. The Project Scientist possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence and will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency such as attending specialty and professional society conferences, continue to update her technical capabilities, and contribute to moving the science forward in the field. Project Scientist may engage in University and public service but will not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she will not require to develop an independent research program or reputation. Accordingly, he/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by Dr. Amparo Villablanca, MD, Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine, with Principal status. The Project Scientist will not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1) RESEARCH (95%)
Research activity (70%)
This position requires creative contributions to a highly collaborative environment of an active cardiovascular research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of cardiovascular medicine. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. Project Scientist will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. In some cases, He/She may supervise students regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments. Project scientist will investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of how different dietary stresses (e.g., high lipids, high glycemic index, high sodium) modulate differential gene expression in murine brain microvascular endothelium. He/She will use murine conditional knockout system or primary cultured human brain microvascular endothelial cells to perform whole-cell and laser captured microscopy tissue-based RNA microarrays. He/She will perform the analyses to show the bioinformatic and nutrigenomic implications as well. Specifically, the candidate will need to have a high level of proficiency, experience and expertise in cell culture; molecular biology techniques for RNA and DNA; animal handling, anesthesia, necropsy and murine brain tissue microdissection; laser capture microdissection
Of brain microvessels; scRNA for RNA sequencing; cryosectioning; use of RAN microchips, and statistical and bioinformatics analysis tools including ANOVA, pairwise comparisons, ClustVis and Metaboanalyst , ShinyGo, Mienturnet, LncRR1search GeneTrial2. Cytoscape software, Enrichr, and PermutMatrix software.
Publication (20%)
The Project Scientist will publish research in peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition (5%)
The Project Scientist will assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. He/She will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
2) PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The Project Scientist will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to her specific field of cardiovascular and genomic science and will serve as a peer reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. He/She will attend seminars, in person or virtually, to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.
When appropriate, he/she may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
