Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) Genomics Facility
Cornell Institute of Biotechnology
The Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) Genomics Facility, within the Cornell Institute of Biotechnology, supports research programs at Cornell, Cornell affiliates and outside institutions, performing DNA sequencing and genotyping services. The individual in this position performs daily, critical decisions for the facility's Illumina sequencing operations, with direct accountability for scheduling and instrument operations. This individual works independently and responsibilities include the preparation, quality control, and processing of Illumina sequencing samples including single-cell library preparations, coordinating sequencing runs, and operating Illumina DNA sequencing instrumentation. For DNA sequencing steps, this position also requires complex and variable run configurations on high-end instrumentation, and troubleshooting of instrument performance. Maintaining meticulous records for Illumina supplies and all processing steps is critical.
This individual also coordinates the day-to-day operations of the lab, including training, scheduling tasks, and working with other members of the Genomics Facility team.
This individual is a primary interface between the unit and users and frequently interacts with users for complex project design using non-standard techniques, troubleshooting complicated sample preparations often requiring multiple consultations as the samples are run through complex protocols to prepare them for sequencing on Illumina sequencers.
The individual in this position is responsible for sample tracking, using a custom-developed LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System), which includes electronic sample-tracking and instrument setup features, data retrieval by the user, and including final billing for services provided. The information in the LIMS is critical for the director of the facility for quality control and monitoring performance of the laboratory.
This is a full-time (39 hours/week), two-year term appointment with the possibility of extension contingent on funding and available work.
No visa sponsorship available for this position.
For full consideration, please submit BOTH cover letter and resume. We have found it most efficient to save application materials as one combined PDF document before attaching.
Required Qualifications:
- BS or BA in Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry and 2-4 years relevant laboratory experience carrying out Illumina library construction, QC, and/or operating Illumina instrumentation or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Attention to detail and multitasking abilities are critical, due to the high-volume, high-throughput nature of the lab operation, and critical importance of correct and timely data generation.
- Ability to work well both independently and with other team members.
- Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills are essential.
- Competency with basic calculations as well as computers, especially with MS EXCEL and standardized laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Must be self-motivated and proactive in meeting facility needs.
Experience with handling cell suspensions and/or single-cell genomics library preparation desirable, but not required.
