A postdoctoral fellow is sought for studies of the role of the alveolar epithelium in innate and adaptive immune responses to the environment.  Our group recently identified Epithelial Membrane Protein 2 (EMP2) as a novel epithelial-expressed regulator of neutrophil entry into the airspace (Lin WC et al., J Clin Invest 2020). We have since generated conditional Emp2 knockout mice and now wish to investigate roles for EMP2 in additional infectious and allergic lung disease models.  The successful candidate will be fortunate in acquiring this highly novel, mature project with established and validated research tools.  Our laboratory has expertise in single-cell genomics and the successful candidate will also be able to receive training to apply these approaches in their work.  

This position is in the Host Defense Group of the Immunity, Inflammation and Disease Laboratory (IIDL), a Branch within the intramural research program of the NIEHS, located in Research Triangle Park, NC.  The NIEHS has extensive core facilities, including cores in bioinformatics, genomics, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, proteomics, metabolomics, imaging, viral vectors, protein expression, and transgenic mouse production that together offer the trainee wide latitude in the design and pursuit of their research questions. The NIEHS has consistently ranked very highly as a site for postdoctoral training; trainees benefit from an extensive career development infrastructure and wide-ranging resources.

Applicants must be very close to obtaining, or have a Ph.D. and/or M.D., ideally with less than 5 years of postdoctoral training.  Expertise in in vivo rodent studies and flow cytometry are strongly preferred.  A background in immunology and cell culture/biology techniques will be considered a strength. Experience working with virus is also an advantage but not essential. The candidate will be trained as necessary in techniques.
