Job Summary: | The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center is seeking an ambitious and highly motivated research specialist to support the collective research activities of the Precision Medicine and Genomic Resources Unit (PMGR unit), directed by Dr. Ted Golos, on genome editing in nonhuman primates. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Drs. Jenna Schmidt and Marina Emborg on research utilizing nonhuman primates, including projects to pilot CRISPR targeting and modification of genes in embryos, cells, and in animals.

Specific responsibilities include:
-Managing cell lines and performing cell-based CRISPR experiments -Performing molecular analysis (DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, qRT-PCR, sequencing) -Training and/or supervising students in lab -Maintaining detailed records and managing sample lists -Providing support in assisted reproductive technologies -Assisting in surgical procedures related to stem cell grafting and CRISPR product delivery -Additional duties as assigned, including: maintaining lab workspaces, preparing and presenting reports of findings, conducting literature searches pertinent to ongoing experimentation, participating in routine laboratory meetings, submitting appropriate paperwork and maintaining accurate records, maintaining detailed laboratory notebook, and other related tasks needed to assist lab in research goals |
Responsibilities: | Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision. - 55% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
- 15% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education: | Required Bachelor's Degree in animal, biological, or biochemical science required |
Qualifications: | Relevant coursework or undergraduate lab experience in molecular genetics and cell culture, or molecular biology is required. Experience in nonhuman primates or mammalian animal models performing nucleic acid extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, cell culture, and tissue preparation for histology and molecular analysis is strongly preferred. Familiarity with bioinformatic analysis or RNA-seq data,and CRISPR targeting and sequencing analysis is strongly encouraged. It will be necessary for the successful candidate to be comfortable around nonhuman primates, both awake and sedated, as the job entails being present during surgical procedures.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a team-player able to work effectively with other research staff and students, as well as excel in sample management and record keeping. Therefore, well-qualified applicants must have exceptional skills in Microsoft Office Word and Excel, both written and verbal communication, organization, and database navigation/management. Flexibility in scheduling, and working as part of a team, is essential for success in this position. The successful candidate will also need to have accountability to complete work independently. |

Additional Information: | Applicant must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates, infectious diseases, and chemicals/medications in a medical research setting, and wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).
-Must be TB negative. -Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized. -Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication. -Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.
