Systems Cell Biology of Host-Pathogen Interactions Specialist Position Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics
Fungal infections are among the most difficult to diagnose and treat and are increasing in prevalence due to immunosuppressive treatments and the AIDS pandemic. To address this need, the Madhani laboratory (madhanilab.ucsf.edu and @hitenmadhani) at the Mission Bay Campus at UCSF is recruiting for an Associate/Full Specialist with experience in cell biology, microbiology, immunology, genomics and/or host-pathogen studies.
The laboratory is in Genentech Hall and specializes in studies of gene regulation and infectious disease using the opportunistic yeast pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. The laboratory is a leader in these fields and has developed C. neoformans as a model system. A two-year commitment is required. The position is supported by a newly-renewed 5-year major grant from NIAID/NIH. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
The individual will work with one or more technicians to generate a whole-genome fluorescent protein collection in C. neoformans using rapid short-homology, CRISPR-based genome engineering methods recently developed by the lab followed by high-throughput supra- resolution live cell light microscopy and machine learning to classify protein localization in response to host-like signals. Additional opportunities for collaborative projects will be available.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.
Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period.
Required Qualifications • PhD in a biological discipline including molecular and cellular biology, genetics/genome sciences, microbiology, immunology, or related area. • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Strong multitasking skills.
Preferred Qualifications • Ideal candidates should have a strong publication record, evidence of the ability to work independently and in a team, experience with next generation sequencing, host- pathogen investigations including murine infections studies, microscopy experience or experience in yeast genetics/genomics.
Please apply online at: https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF03942 with cover letter, CV and contact information for three references. Applicant materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission. The selected candidate must meet all of the qualifications at the time of appointment.
