A full-time Research Assistant position is available in the Division of Gastroenterology at Boston Children's Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Yanjia Jason Zhang, MD PhD. This position is ideal for candidates interested in basic and translational gastroenterology research. Dr. Zhang is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist with multiple projects within the field of obesity, and is specifically interested how gut microbes might affect hunger, satiety and food choice. The research assistant will work as part of a team of scientists and clinicians at both Boston Children's Hospital and MIT who focus on the interactions between gut microbes, the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Direct involvement in independent research within a broad science project involving gut microbes and their metabolites.* Under general supervision, performing a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests and experimental procedures for the purpose of research.* Cell culture, generation of cell lines, bioluminescence assays in Dr. Wayne Lencer's lab at BCH.* Anaerobic bacterial culture, creation of bacterial and bacterial supernatant libraries, generation of transgenic bacteria as a visiting scientist in Dr. Eric Alm's laboratory at MIT.* Development and optimization of cell-based assays for discovery of host-microbe interactions.* Participating in laboratory meetings and presentations.* Maintaining records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed. Maintaining equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner. Sterilizing and cleaning glassware, preparing media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:* Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or a closely related field, and practical lab experience.* The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.* Experience in one or more of these experimental techniques: cell culture, bacterial cultivation, PCR and molecular cloning.* Strong organizational skills will be an asset.* An interest in or experience with computational biology tools (Python, R, Bioconductor) will be an asset. * Strong communication skills
