The Moffitt Laboratory in the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School is looking for a highly motivated candidate for a Research Assistant position.
The Moffitt laboratory leverages a cutting-edge spatial transcriptomics technique--MERFISH--capable of imaging and identifying thousands of different RNA molecules in their native tissue context. This approach, co-pioneered by Dr. Moffitt, combines the power of single-cell RNA sequencing with high resolution microscopy. With the ability to directly visualize gene expression at the genome-scale within intact tissues slices, it is now possible to create molecularly defined atlases of tissues. And these atlases, in turn, provided the ability to discover, functionally characterize, and map cell types, states, and interactions within a very broad range of tissues across all domains of life.
The Moffitt laboratory is extending this technology by increasing its imaging throughput by orders of magnitude, increasing the range of RNAs that can be identified, and coupling this technique with other approaches to single-cell 'omics. In parallel, the Moffitt laboratory is leveraging this technique to ask fundamental questions at the microbiome-host interface in mammals--questions such as how the microbiome is spatially organized, how does this organization affect interactions within this community and with the host, and how are gut cell types remodeled in response to perturbations to the microbiome?
Spatial transcriptomics techniques, such as MERFISH, were named Nature Methods technique of the Year in 2020, and these techniques are seeing rapid adoption in both academic and industrial research. Individuals that hold this position will be integrated into multiple ongoing studies that are both leveraging MERFISH and extending this technique; thus, the position offers the opportunity to be trained in this emerging and exciting new technology.
