Position description
The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (hwsph.ucsd.edu) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for an Assistant Project Scientist position to contribute to new and ongoing public health research studies focusing on nutrition and chronic disease prevention.
The School has focal areas of Behavioral Medicine, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Policy, Health Equity, Public Mental Health, and Climate and Environmental Health and offers teaching and student mentoring opportunities in our Bachelor of Science in Public Health, MPH, PhD in Public Health (administered jointly with San Diego State University), and MS and PhD in Biostatistics degree programs. Further, the School has an MAS in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UCSD
Extension and a Preventive Medicine Residency program. The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on Health Promotion and Equity, Women's Health, Tobacco Control, and Wireless and Population Health Systems and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and with other partners across
the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School houses five recharge cores providing services to both UCSD and the external community, and the School's faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.
As a critical member of the research team, the Project Scientist will contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of research studies and be responsible for major contributions to scientific writing, grant writing, and presentations of research findings, including: collaborating on the development and implementation of strategic research grant proposals; participating in the collection, organization, management, analysis, and presentation of research data, including preparing scientific reports, manuscripts, and presentations for academic and community audiences; helping investigators meet publication and research program priorities; utilizing continuous improvement methodologies to evaluate and ensure that future plans and processes are informed by research findings.
At UC San Diego, Project Scientists are academic researchers who are expected to make significant and creative contributions to a research team, but are not necessarily leaders of the research team. They are not required to carry out independent research or develop an independent research reputation but will publish and carry out research or creative programs with supervision by a member of the Professor or Professional Research series.
Appointments and duration vary depending on the length of the research project and availability of funding.
Appointment will be at Assistant Project Scientist level based on background and experience.
