Bile acids are vital to the digestion of our food, act as signaling molecules throughout our bodies and shape the structure of our microbiome. Recently, our collaborative group discovered a new set of bile acids made by the microbiome called ‘microbially conjugated bile acids’. This discovery was published in the prestigious journal Nature last year https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-020-2047-9. The Quinn Lab at Michigan State University (www.robertquinnlab.com) is undergoing a collaborative project with the laboratory of Dr. Laura McCabe and Dr. Robert Hausinger to study these exciting new microbial molecules and their role in the mammalian GI tract. We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher to lead this project. This postdoc will be responsible for microbiology and murine experiments on these microbial bile acids as we try to understand the breadth of their production, impact on host physiology and role in health and/or disease. The project will involve classic microbiology experiments, bioinformatics analysis of microbiome and metabolome data and experiments with a mouse model.
Duties include culturing bacteria, molecular biology, gene expression assays, mass spectrometry, metagenomics and mouse husbandry and experiments.

Doctorate -Microbiology, physiology, biochemistry
PhD in microbiology, physiology, biochemistry or related field.
Experience with mass spectrometry, microbiome data and/or mouse husbandry are desirable.
