The Staff Research Associate II (SRA) will carry out independent research under the supervision of the lead project scientist and assist in preparing research plans, developing and performing new research techniques, and troubleshooting new and established assay techniques. The SRA assists in planning, designing, performing and analyzing in vitro experiments to study expression of receptor tyrosine kinase like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) in ovarian, breast, and pancreatic cancer stem cells and to define role of ROR1 in promoting tumor growth, metastasis, and tumor initiation using primary cancer cells and cell lines. Perform molecular biology and ELISA-protein assays. Must have extensive experience working with flow cytometry and molecular cloning. Other duties assigned as needed.
Theoretical knowledge of immunology, molecular biology, cell biology and protein chemistry generally acquired through a Bachelor's degree.
Strong knowledge and experience in flow cytometry. Perform and interpret results from experiments with cells stained with specific fluorochrome-conjugated monoclonal antibodies.
Knowledge, experience and willingness to handle blood, plasma and other human specimens for processing and shipping. Be willing and able to work with human samples, biohazardous materials and radioactivity.
Strong experience in molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA & protein) including: cloning, PCR, SDS Page electrophoresis, virus preparation and infection, western blotting, ELISA assays, and recombinant DNA manipulation.
Ability to follow UCSD Safety and Hazardous Materials guidelines. Ability and willingness to work with hazardous/biohazardous materials.
Experience in tissue culture and sterile techniques. Maintain and establish cell lines.
Ability to perform immunohistochemical analysis, particularly using anti-ROR1 antibody, 4A5.
Excellent organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and order supplies.
Ability to perform in vitro PK/PD studies on anti-CLL pharmacological agents on cell lines and human cells as needed.
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Demonstrated skill to effectively and clearly communicate with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility to faculty, academicians, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
Adequate knowledge of the cancer cell biology.
