About Nationwide Children's Hospital
Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) located in Columbus OH, is an independent, not-for-profit, academic medical center with 628 inpatient beds and is currently the second largest children’s hospital in the nation. With over 13,000 employees working at over 50 locations in Central and Southeastern Ohio, Nationwide Children’s Hospital is the sole pediatric quaternary care facility in central Ohio. Founded in 1892, Nationwide Children’s Hospital houses the Department of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The Steve and Cindy Rasmussen Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital was created in 2016 as one of the first ventures into pediatric personalized genomic medicine for children's hospitals and is focused on improving outcomes for our patients through the use of molecular diagnostics. The mission of the institute is to build a seamless continuum between research, clinical testing, and patient care. Recognizing that the root cause of many childhood diseases can be traced directly to the genome, the vision for the Institute for Genomic Medicine is to integrate molecular genomics into the mainstream of pediatric patient diagnosis... and treatment. The institute combines robust clinical diagnostics, leading-edge research and development, and high-performance computing to enable precision genomic medicine. Another area of emphasis is providing educational opportunities for care providers and all levels of trainees, as a means by which genome-based results are made accessible and meaningful to the patients and families we serve. The Institute for Genomic Medicine is advancing the understanding of genomic medicine through cutting edge translational research, launch of new genome-based clinical tests, development of computational tools and the application of big data technologies. By combining novel laboratory methods, state-of-the-art bioinformatics solutions and machine learning technologies, the institute is driven to create a future where no child with genetic disease goes undiagnosed and every child with cancer receives optimal treatment based on their genomic profile.
