DESCRIPTION The Feng Laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco is seeking to recruit an outstanding candidate to fill a Specialist position at the Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full Level.
The Feng lab primarily utilizes cancer genomics, cell biology, CRISPR and small molecule screens, and mouse modeling approaches to answer fundamental questions underlying prostate cancer biology, with the goal of translating discoveries from the lab into the clinic. Ongoing research projects in the Feng Lab focuses on (1) identifying molecular drivers of prostate cancer pathogenesis, (2) understanding the mechanisms that contribute to disease progression and metastasis, and (3) developing novel therapeutic strategies. We work collaboratively with basic scientists, computational biologists, pathologists, and oncologists at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. This position involves substantial collaboration with wet-lab collaborators, providing data analysis for ongoing projects, and is focused on increasing our understanding of the biology of cancer to accelerate the development of new therapies. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to study design and to apply bioinformatic and statistical tools to enable analysis of genomic, transcriptomic, immunologic and clinical data. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to writing scientific publications describing their work and will develop in-depth understanding of topics in cancer biology and genetics that are related to their ongoing project topics. Candidates will be expected to work independently and efficiently multi-task. Those with the proven capacity to effectively communicate and a track record in productively contributing to collaborative multidisciplinary teams to support grant, manuscript and report preparation will be given preference.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Contribute to research as part of a large multidisciplinary team. • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and contribute to study design. • Apply algorithms and tools for analysis of various data sets. • Evaluate and recommend new emerging technologies, approaches, and problems. • Create scientifically rigorous data presentations, visualizations, and communications of results. • Present updates and findings at group and scientific meetings • Contribute to grant submissions, manuscript preparation, and scientific collaborations. • Maintain and organize computational infrastructure and resources.
Requirements: • Strong background in bioinformatics, genetics and statistics, with prior experience analyzing genome sequence data. • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools for transcriptomic analysis including RNASeq analysis. • Experience with statistical and genome analysis using Python, R, and command-line driven bioinformatics tools is key. Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative research team and effectively interact with a broad range of researchers from distinct disciplines. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines. • Specialists: o Junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or 4 years of relevant research experience. o Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or 5 years of relevant research experience. o Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or 5-10 years of relevant research experience. o Full Specialist rank must possess a PhD degree or at least ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization. • Applicants must have obtained the required degree for the appropriate rank by the time of hire.
Preferred qualifications: • Prior independent research experience in molecular and cellular biology or computational biology or tumor immunology. • Demonstrated capacity to accurately and effectively present projects to multi-disciplinary audiences. • Prior experience maintaining computational infrastructure and resources.
