An NIH funded position is available to investigate the molecular genetics of secreted proteins that have been implicated in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using the premier invertebrate model organism, C. elegans . AMD is a neurodegenerative retinal disease that is the leading cause of blindness among the elderly. Specific investigations will identify secreted proteins that interact with sensory neuron cell surfaces and the role these interactions play on neuron structure and function during aging. Techniques include forward and reverse genetic screens, construction of transgenic animals, advanced microscopy, and a large variety of molecular techniques for genetic manipulations including CRISPR-Cas9 targeted mutagenesis (see Acker et al. Successful candidates will have, at a minimum, a recent Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Molecular Genetics or a related biomedical field, demonstration of success in publication and presentation, and familiarity with some of the techniques utilized by the lab. Experience with C. elegans as a model system is helpful but not essential.
