RESEARCH SCIENTIST , Media Lab-Sculpting Evolution Group , to supervise and assist research projects focusing on advancing biotechnology safely. Will design and perform experiments, supervise diverse research projects, train and mentor new arrivals, help manage key collaborations, write publications and grant proposals, and optionally engage in science communication to general audiences and/or policymakers. The group retains a focus on understanding and controlling evolution, including its PRANCE system for high-throughput robotic directed evolution and adding machine learning and in silico directed evolution to its repertoire. The group is now focus more on engineering mammalian systems, not just in developing novel genome editing approaches relevant to ecological engineering, but also with relevance to biosecurity and mitigating catastrophic risks. Examples of ongoing projects in this area include Secure DNA and the Nucleic Acid Observatory. The group also works on receptor decoys and other broad-spectrum or rapidly scalable defenses against exponentially spreading agents.
Job Requirements REQUIRED : Ph.D. in biology, chemisty, physics, bioinformatics, mechanical engineering, computer science, or related field; and skill troubleshooting experiments involving complex systems. PREFERRED : one year of postdoctoral experience; skill with or willingness to learn library construction, NGS sample preparation, sequencing, and/or data analysis; mammalian cell culture and engineering experience; experience with computational biology algorithms, including bioinformatics, computational structural biology, statistical machine learning, and deep learning; experience with high-performance and cloud computing, especially AWS, GitHub, and Docker; familiarity with or willingness to learn circuits, hardware, 3D printing, and/or robotics; strong written and oral communication skills; and desire to mentor and help others learn.
