The STEM Department in the School of Arts and Sciences at Regis College is inviting applications for two faculty positions in Biology. Both will be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor. These hires are part of the School of Arts and Sciences cluster hire initiative in “Social Justice and Education.”
The cluster hire is part of an intended multi-year phased hiring plan within the School of Arts and Sciences; we seek to build a cohort of teaching scholars who are committed to teaching diverse undergraduate students across a range of majors/the undergraduate core curriculum through their respective fields of specialization. In the first phase of this cluster hire, four of the positions will be within the STEM Department. Faculty will be expected to use high impact teaching practices; diverse, equitable, and inclusive pedagogical practices; and engage with questions of social justice in their work. This cluster hire initiative contributes to the goals of President Hays’s “Commitment to do Better”, which (among other goals) aims to increase the diversity of its faculty and staff, and the diversity and inclusion of its academic curriculum.
The STEM Department is a multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative department that houses programs in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Cybersecurity, and Environmental Sustainability. As well, the Department includes faculty in the following disciplines: Chemistry, Mathematics, Lab Operations Management, and Physics. Faculty not only support their own majors, minors, and advisees within the department, they also teach non-majors who must complete undergraduate core requirements in the natural sciences, as well as students majoring in nursing and the allied health professions. It is expected that anyone hired as an Assistant Professor of Biology would collaborate within the department and across academic departments and programs.
We seek diverse candidates with accomplishments and experience in teaching a wide range of biology courses to diverse populations of undergraduate students using high impact practices and innovative pedagogy. We are particularly looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of students and faculty and who share our vision of helping students reach their full potential through excellence in teaching and in developing innovative curriculum, labs, and research experiences for undergraduate students. Anyone hired for this position should be able to place the history and practice of Biology within broader conversations concerning diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
As part of the cluster hire in “Social Justice and Education,” it is expected that someone hired for this position will actively engage in work related to curriculum, teaching, scholarship, and service in explicit support of the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of Regis College. Ideal candidates will perform research that helps to engage undergraduate students in that work within the broader context of social justice conversations.
Teach the equivalent of a 4-4 load during the academic year, inclusive of introductory courses in Biology and courses in the faculty’s specialty.
Actively collaborate within the department and across academic departments and programs to identify barriers to student success and then constructively address those barriers to promote student success.
Collaborate with other faculty hired as part of the “Social Justice and Education” cluster to build capacity within STEM and the School of Arts and Sciences to sustain diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Engage in scholarly activity appropriate to the discipline such as publishing; presenting at national, regional, and local conferences; conducting research; and/or grant writing and related activities.
Fulfill all roles and responsibilities associated with a faculty appointment, including teaching, scholarship and service to the Department, Programs, School and Institution.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum requirement: earned PhD in Biology or similar field; candidates who specialize in any of the following are particularly encouraged to apply: bioinformatics, environmental sustainability, or physiology.
Ability to place the history and practice of the field within broader conversations concerning diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
Demonstrated evidence of at least three years prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level with expertise in high impact teaching practices.
Demonstrated experience with designing and teaching undergraduate labs is highly desired.
Demonstrated evidence of online teaching and course development experience.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues.
Demonstrated familiarity with academic assessment, particularly at the course level.
Familiarity with the learning management system Moodle is preferred, but not required.
Commitment to creating an inclusive classroom learning environment in keeping with the University's commitment to inclusive excellence in a diverse educational community.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in noise, odors, etc.
May spend extended periods at terminal, on telephone, or operating other office machines requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
