The Assistant Program Director/Genetic Counselor position is a unique position in which the selected candidate will serve as the Assistant Program Director for the Augustana-Sanford Genetic Counseling Graduate Program (ASGCGP) for 50-60% of their position. The remaining 40-50% of this position allows the individual to maintain a clinical genetic counseling practice at Sanford Health. This is a full-time position but the candidate’s time will be split between Augustana University and Sanford Health, both located in Sioux Falls, SD.
This candidate should be highly collaborative and is expected to contribute to the educational and research missions of the program. Holding a faculty rank at Augustana, this individual also contributes effort towards program administration and engagement in University and public service as appropriate.
The genetic counselor will provide supportive counseling regarding genetic issues of the patient and family; assist families to comprehend the diagnosis, probable course of the disorder, and available management strategies. The genetic counselor will also communicate risks of recurrence and options available to the patient and family such as genetic testing and medical management; coordinate/facilitate genetic testing; interpret and communicate genetic test results to the patient and referring physician and determine the need for appropriate follow-up; document patient contact in the form of patient letters, physician letters, and progress notes; conduct case research of appropriate medical genetics literature; and develop and present educational material and related programs as appropriate.
Key skills include the ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client; knowledge of human genetic disorders and birth defects; ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment; ability to develop and present educational programs and/or written materials; ability to advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
The individual will be able to absorb and analyze information when making decisions. Additionally, they should be skilled at executing ideas and projects. We welcome candidates who can contribute to strategic planning and long term goal setting as well as develop and implement action plans. The program leadership team, along with it’s students, faculty and supervisors, encourage utilization of a growth mindset.
Given that this role includes clinical genetic counseling, we are only interested in candidates who have a M.S. degree in genetic counseling. Candidates with experience in leadership and a record of achievement in developing, implementing, and assessing innovative approaches for the education and training of genetic counseling students are desired.
