The Biology Department at Washington and Jefferson College invites applications for Adjunct Instructor position for the Fall 2021 semester (only).
BIO 121 (Foundations in Cell and Molecular Biology) Adjunct Laboratory Instructor
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach two BIO 121 laboratory sections'each lab section is scheduled to meet on campus and in person for 3.25 hours each week (for two lab sections a total of 6.5 hours of scheduled in-person teaching each week). There may be additional student contact time depending on student's completion of lab work (will vary with the lab assignments each week).
Lab instruction responsibilities include:
Help students to complete and troubleshoot lab work in basic molecular biology and bioinformatics approaches.
Attend weekly 30-minute laboratory preparation meeting with other laboratory instructors and laboratory assistants'instruction and grading needs to be consistent across all lab sections so lab prep meetings are mandatory.
Offer at least two in-person office hours per week for student consultation.
Administer and grade lab quizzes and lab assignments.
Additional responsibilities include:
Post all grades in a timely fashion to the College's classroom management system.
It is essential to regularly check email and respond to emails from students, Biology faculty, College staff, and the Office of Academic Affairs in a timely fashion.
Have experience independently executing and troubleshooting laboratory protocols in DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequence analysis.
Have a strong interest in working with, and mentoring, first- and second-year undergraduate students.
Be able to work cooperatively with other faculty teaching in this introductory course.
Have excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
Must have the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Applicants should have earned an M.S. or a higher degree in Biology with specific expertise in Molecular Biology or a related field. Applicants should have significant lab experience in their area of expertise.
