Dept Marketing Statement Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world's genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. The Genomics Institute involves approximately 90 personnel, participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts and foundations; in addition the GI provides funding support for approximately 50 additional personnel for GI related projects. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions.
The California Department of Public Health Pathogen Genomics team at the GI uses the latest sequence analysis and visualization technologies to facilitate outbreak investigation and research for public health responses. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced bioinformatics programming professional with a broad understanding of computational algorithms; identifies and resolves a wide range of issues / software bugs. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates independently. Projects include working with bioinformaticians to build analysis tools in a cloud collaboration environment and creating tools to pair PHI/PII metadata with genome sequence information for co-visualization. Develops methods for geographic/genetic co-visualization using the google maps API. Maintains security of the data on the clients' networks. Customizes tools to the specifics of secure databases.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: Salary Range: $81,600 - $110,000/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 25% - Applies complex bioinformatics concepts to design, develop, modify, debug, and evaluate software programs and web tools. Implements workflows submitting consensus genomes to analysis tools.
25% - Performs complex data modeling, performance and integration testing, and builds user interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents.
25% - Develops, implements, and maintains web interfaces to share and display bioinformatics analysis and content with collaborators and other users. Develops methods for geographic/genomic co-visualization using google maps API.
15% - Analyzes existing programs or works to formulate logic for new systems, devises logic procedures, flowcharts, data analysis, codes and tests / debugs programs. Implements tools for streamlining pairing of metadata with sequences for visualization.
5% - Conducts bioinformatics programming and testing of new algorithms that interact with other related databases. Performs quality review to ensure submission of sequences to repositories.
5% - Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and sets system standards for analysis algorithms, tools, and infrastructure.
Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
Communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization.
Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
Ability to work as an effective member of a team.
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
