The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Genetic Counseling Assistant to join our team in a full time position within the Division of Clinical Genetics. Columbia University Medical Centerâ€™s Department of Pediatrics is a world leader in providing care for children. Our mission areas include Healthcare, Education and Research. We also have several active Clinical trials available to our patients. The role of the Genetic Counseling Assistant will be to provide support to the genetic counseling staff in various administrative tasks. This work experience will provide invaluable experience for individuals who intend to apply for graduate programs in clinical genetics and genetic counseling.
The Genetic Counseling Assistant will perform the following Job Responsibilities but are not limited to (Essential Functions):
Assist with referral management by reviewing incoming referrals with the scheduling staff and responding to referring patientsâ€™ or providersâ€™ basic questions about what to expect from the Genetics department.
Assist with pre-visit preparation, including collection of relevant medical records and lab reports, medical record review, and coordination of patient intake forms.
Collect information from patients in preparation for their appointment
Make reminder phone calls for upcoming patient appointments
Assist in processing, packaging and shipping specimens and preparation of samples for genetic testing in a timely manner.
Obtain and coordinate insurance pre-authorization for specialized laboratory testing
Scan and upload documents into the electronic medical record system
Perform other related duties as required
Minimum of Associates Degree required plus 0 -2 years of related experience.
Proficient in Spanish
Bachelorâ€™s Degree or higher preferred
Familiar with medical terminology and laboratory testing
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Able to work independently and with teams
Professional and courteous
