The Hopkins Lab within the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University seeks a Laboratory Technician to work at the Arnold Arboretum in the Weld Hill Research Building.
Our research focuses on understanding the fundamental evolutionary forces driving adaptation and speciation. We utilize a variety of population genetic, molecular, greenhouse, and field techniques to study selection, gene flow, and adaptive mutations in plants. Much of our work focuses on characterizing reproductive isolation between species and mate choice within species. This position will involve assisting senior researchers with a variety of laboratory and greenhouse tasks including:
Performing basic plant care and propagation;
Performing controlled crosses between plants;
Performing basic microscopy on plant tissue;
Recording results of experiments;
Organizing and summarizing data, in collaboration with team;
Under direction, performing standard laboratory techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, and cloning;
Working with senior scientists on design, planning, and optimization of experiments;
Other related lab duties as required.

Some college background in science required, preferably with undergraduate coursework in evolution, genetics, and/or plant biology. At least 1 year of experience in a lab or greenhouse setting required (course work may count toward experience).
BA/BS degree preferred. Demonstrated abilities in basic laboratory techniques helpful, but not required. Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including statistical methods preferred. Strong communication skills required. Well organized, self-motivated and detail oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills.
