The Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is currently recruiting an Assistant Project Scientist to join the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Flint. The Flint lab uses genetic, molecular, cellular, and circuit approaches to understand how genes influence behavior through the brain. The Assistant Project Scientist will work as a member of the lab and lead projects related to the effect of genetic variation on defensive and fear-related behaviors in mice. The projects that the Assistant Project Scientist will lead include: 1) whole-brain microscopy of cleared mouse brains, 2) behaviorally relevant circuit manipulations of different cellular populations in the brain, 3) bulk and single-nucleus DNA and RNA sequencing of different mouse brain regions. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the projects in the lab, the Assistant Project Scientist will need to have a broad skillset including stereotaxic injections of viruses into the brain, ability to independently run and analyze behavioral paradigms related to fear and defensive behaviors, experience with both DNA and RNA sequencing, familiarity with bioinformatics analysis, mouse colony management, among other routine lab techniques. In addition, experience with writing manuscripts and grants is a plus. The project scientist will be expected to work independently and meet with Dr. Flint regularly to discuss the progress and project directions. Together, they will work to 1) generate rigorous and high-quality data, 2) troubleshoot any technical or experimental issues that arise and develop action plans to address them, 3) follow all guidelines and regulations set forth by the university, and 4) supervise/train other personnel in the lab. The position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent in neuroscience or genetics and at least three years of experience in a relevant research field. Good verbal and written communication skills are required, along with general computer and statistical proficiency (i.e. Office, PowerPoint, etc.). The individual should be highly motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and interested in working in a collaborative environment. Salary will be consistent with the UCLA Project Scientist Series.
