The Human Genetics Research Associate will work closely with Lab members on human genetic research projects examining the genetic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as epilepsy, autism and mental retardation in children. Work closely with the Lab's PI and the Lab's Clinical Study Coordinator to establish priorities, initiatives, deficiencies and solutions. Duties include organizing and documenting incoming/outgoing clinical samples for genomic evaluation, genotyping, linkage analysis, extracting DNA and RNA from incoming samples, interacting with our patient database and reviewing exome and genome data for identification of genes responsible for disorders. General laboratory maintenance include supervising student lab personnel and ordering supplies and general oversight.
Theoretical knowledge of human genetics, genealogy, developmental neuroanatomy, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of disease, pathogenesis and syndromology.
One to two ( 1 - 2) years of practical laboratory experience in human genetics or molecular biology. Experience and competence with standard and complex molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extractions, quantification, genotyping, genetic mapping, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), RT-PCR, sequencing and analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data.
Familiarity of genetic causes of human disease, especially in children.
Proven experience in sterile-technique, cell culture, Universal Precautions and molecular biology techniques.
Excellent record keeping and data management skills.
Proficient experience managing computerized databases, and ability to troubleshoot and optimize systems.
Ability to obtain and record accurate information and details to support completion of forms and reports for manuscripts, grant writing and grant reporting.
Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population. Ability to effectively compose, edit and proofread written materials using clear and concise expression, proper grammar, style, and punctuation. Ability to read and interpret medical literature.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively. Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize assignments, maintain workflow, and work productively in meeting critical deadlines and milestones.
Solid computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, email system, and a variety of web-based programs. Ability to create and maintain databases, perform standard computer tasks, learn new programs/applications with minimal direction, and exercise fast and accurate typing skills. Commitment to update/maintain technology skills with relevant computer software.
Excellent interpersonal skills with strong, demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility. Ability and willingness to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community and with a diverse population of staff, faculty, industry and others. B.S./B.A./M.S. with two (2+) plus years of research experience in a molecular genetics laboratory.
Experience communicating with practitioners around research studies, gathering clinical data, and fostering collaborative relationships. Strong knowledge of research study policies and procedures.
Experience working with human biological specimens.
Knowledge of statistics and previous experience managing patient databases.
Experience with nucleic acid extraction, quantification, PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, biobanking, patient database, model organisms, mouse genotyping, mouse colony management, SNP genotyping, Illumina library preparation, exome sequence analysis, variant prioritization, linkage analysis are preferred skills.
